About Matt

Matt Carr was born in Woolwich. After not doing that much at school (except being an idiot, playing football and drawing) he studied graphic design at Hastings and Croydon and then worked as, amongst other things (including gardener, road sweeper and kitchen porter), a signwriter and mural painter before becoming a founder member of London-based design agency Point Blank. When his first daughter was born, he left to spend more time at home and work for himself as a creative, designer and illustrator with clients including Penguin, The Imperial War Museum, Channel 4, ITV, Virgin, Sainsburys, Samsung and Heineken. He has also created a set of Infographic Biographies which he has designed and illustrated. To date the Biographic series has 25 titles including Shakespeare and Frida Kahlo.

As a sideline, in 2013, he wrote and illustrated the picture book The Tale Of Russell The Scared Crow which he published and promoted himself. The book was well received which led him to develop more book ideas in his spare time. His first published book Superbat published in 2017 with Scholastic, followed by Spyder, in 2018. His third children’s book Rocketmole was published in 2019. Rhinocorn Rules! his first book with Egmont was published in February 2020 and Now Wash Your Hands! his first rhyming book was written and published in 6 weeks over the spring of the same year, in response to the Coronavirus Crisis. In 2021, Matt has created three Ed & Bunny books for Young Enterprise to be given to school children and since then he has written and illustrated several picture books including Captain Looroll and Pop!

In his books, Matt tries to combine his love of bold, graphic illustration and ridiculous humour that hopefully appeals to readers young and old.

He loves Tea and does Zumba every week.

He lives in Lewes with his partner, three daughters, a dog and two cats. They all think he’s an idiot, especially the cats.
